Round up the tabs you forgot about.

Tab Wrangler is a free, open source extension for Chrome and Firefox. When a tab sits inactive for a while, Tab Wrangler closes it, leaving you with just the tabs you actually use. Odds are you won't miss the rest, but they're saved in case you do.

No account, no tracking, and no ads.

How Tab Wrangler clears out the tabs you forgot

  1. 1

You open a bunch of tabs, then forget about some of them.

  2. 2

Tabs you haven't visited in a while go stale.

  3. 3

Tab Wrangler closes the stale tabs and saves them to the Tab Corral.

  4. 4

You're left with the tabs you actually use, and you likely won't miss the rest.

Nothing gets lost

Every tab Tab Wrangler closes goes to the Tab Corral. Search by page title or address, sort by when tabs closed or which site they came from, and restore one tab or a whole handful at once. Changed your mind? Undo.

Tabs marked with come back with their back-button history and scroll position. Your browser keeps that for the last 25 tabs closed.

You decide what stays open

Tab Rules are checked from top to bottom, and the first one that fits a tab decides what happens to it. Match on a tab's address, title, or tab group name, or on whether it's pinned or playing audio. Then lock it, or give it a time limit of its own.

Out of the box, pinned tabs and tabs playing audio stay open, and all other tabs get closed after 1 hour of inactivity.

Tab Rules

Add rule

Rules are checked top to bottom. Tabs are only handled by the first rule they match.

IF Pinned THEN Lock tab
ELSE IF Playing audio THEN Lock tab
ELSE IF URL includes calendar THEN Lock tab
ELSE IF Tab group name includes Trip THEN Stale after 3 days
ELSE Mark tab stale after inactive for 1 hour

Only on the clock

Choose the days and hours Tab Wrangler runs. Outside them every timer stops, so a weekend away doesn't cost you the tabs you left open on Friday.

Active Hours

Tab timers count down and tabs are auto-closed only during these hours.

Monday 12:00 AM to Midnight All day

And the little things

Lock a tab, or a whole window

Locked tabs stay open no matter how long they sit. Lock a window and every tab in it stays too, including ones you open later.

See what's next to go

The popup shows how long each open tab has left.

Keep a few around

Nothing closes until a window has more than 20 tabs. Pick your own number, or count across all windows.

Pause any time

Stop every timer with one click. Timers can also stop on their own while you're away from the computer.

Wrangle now

Don't feel like waiting? Close the oldest stale tabs right away.

Right-click a page

From Tab Wrangler's right-click context menu, close that page, never close it, or never close anything on that site, all without opening the popup.

Your settings, everywhere

Settings sync through your browser account. Export a backup file and restore it on any computer.

It doesn't look inside your tabs

Tab Wrangler reads each tab's title and address so it can show them to you and match your rules. It can't read what's on the page, and nothing about you or your browsing is sent anywhere.

Give your tabs some room.

Install Tab Wrangler and keep only the tabs you actually use. The ones you forgot about will clear themselves out.
